Perspectives in Art: A Contemporary Overview
Oct 24, 2024
Presenting a multi-generational selection of artists, the current auction surveys the complexity and stylistic diversity of Romanian postwar and contemporary art, impacted by turbulent histories of censorship, transition and struggles for creative freedom. Spanning painting, photography, lithography, sculpture, and mixed media works, Perspectives in Art: A Contemporary Overview assembles a powerful mix of contemporary masters – from Ion Bârlădeanu, Ștefan Câlția, to Ion Grigorescu or Ecaterina Vrana – alongside equally skilled artists that are yet to be fully discovered by a wider audience.
From explorations of abstract geometries and bodily shapes, from the quotidian to the mythological, from Post-Impressionism to postmodernism, the presented works are infused with strong emotional landscapes, as well as high conceptual stakes. They evoke varying perspectives on the role of art in society, whether as art for its own sake, art as social critique, or art as seen in connection with technology and the computational sciences. Overall, each of the artists included in the selection constructs a highly unique visual discourse, bringing her or his contribution to global modernism and its afterlife.
