Zanzibar Chest
- A genuine teak Zanzibar chest, circa late 19th century, adorned with heavy brass overlays, repoussé work, and nail heads arranged in elaborate floral and geometric patterns. These not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal but symbolized wealth and status. At the base, the chest has three small pull-out drawers, which is a classic element of Zanzibar chests, & features a spacious interior.
These chests are rich in history and are typically from the 18th to early 20th centuries, often originating in coastal East Africa (notably Zanzibar), with strong influences from India, Arabia, and Persia due to trade and cultural exchange.
Complete with the original padlock and key.
Condition: Used, some minor faults to the wood throughout, needs cleaning on the inside.
