Ondine ashtray. France, ca. 1900
Bronze smoking ashtray, France, c. 1900. In the form of a seashell, its interior depicts, on the basis of high relief sculpture, a sea scene in which a mermaid accompanied by two other beings, in the guise of a man and a child, play sounds on wind instruments while observing a flock of birds in the distance. Subject possibly taken from the romantic novel Ondine written by the German Friedrich de la Motte Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, .
Entitled ‘ONDINE’, it is signed by ‘Révillon’, near the lower right corner.
Measurements: 20 x 15,5 cm.
