RARE BYZANTINE GOLD PENDANT WITH CARNELIAN INTAGLIO DEPICTING THEODOSIUS
Ca. AD 370 - 450.A Byzantine gold pendant in the shape of bell, that secures a large carnelian intaglio. The intaglio depicts a Byzantine emperor, Theodosius. The figure is front facing, dressed in a long tunic and a large crown; the facial features are typical of the early Byzantine period. The bust is surrounded by an inscription with a cross at the centre. On the top of the pendant is a double round hoop.
