BYZANTINE GOLD RING WITH A RED GARNET INTAGLIO
Ca. AD 500 - 600 .A beautiful Byzantine gold ring with a red garnet, featuring a unique silhouette. The ring has a round hoop with a flat section, decorated with a wave motif alternating with clusters of three gold pellets. The shoulders connect to a hexagonal bezel, that secures a red garnet intaglio. The intaglio most likely depicts three seeds, surrounded by a square frame composed of clusters of six golden pellets.Size: D:17.53mm / US: 7 1/4 / UK: O; Weight: 5gProvenance: Private UK collection; previously acquired on the UK art market in the 1990s.
