MEDIEVAL GOLD RING WITH DOVE AND CROSSES
Ca. AD 1200.A medieval 21ct gold ring with a large round bezel and geometric patterns on the shoulders. The bezel depicts a pelican, a symbol of Christ, facing backwards with folded wings surrounded by four patent crosses. Medieval people believed that the pelican killed its young when they were born and then revived them with its blood, and thus these birds were viewed as a symbol of sacrifice, akin to Jesus.Size: D:17.73mm / US: 7 1/2 / UK: O 1/2; Weight: 6.8gProvenance: Property of a London Ancient art collector, formerly in a Mayfair private collection of Mr. P.
