GERMAN HUNTING CUTTING KNIFE WITH SCABBARD
Ca. 1500-1600 AD.A steel hunting knife with a broad rectangular-shaped heavy blade adorned with hallmarks. The single-edged blade possesses remarkable strength, lending itself to the demands of hunting tasks. The ferrule is intricately embellished with a relief depiction of a lion in a recumbent pose. The lion, a symbol of courage and power, adds an aura of regality to this hunting knife, evoking a sense of prestige among its users. To enhance its functionality, the blade is accompanied by a fitting scabbard, which serves as a protective sheath. The scabbard boasts lateral suspension rings, allowing for convenient carriage and accessibility. Crafted with precision, the scabbard ensures that the knife remains securely fastened while allowing swift and effortless deployment when needed. German hunting knives of this type were designed to withstand the rigours of hunting expeditions, displaying a balance between sturdiness and manoeuvrability. With their broad blades and single edges, these knives excel in cutting and slicing tasks, making them ideal companions for hunting endeavours. The flat-section handle, complemented by a turned-down pommel, offered a comfortable and secure grip, allowing the wielder to maintain control and precision during intricate movements.Size: L:530mm / W:140mm ; 1.87kgProvenance: Private English collection pre 2000.
