AN ISLAMIC TALISMANIC BOWL WITH ENGRAVED CALLIGRAPHY, POSSIBLY TIMURID
Ca. 14th-15th century AD . A talismanic bowl of circular form. The deep interior is finely engraved with a central floral medallion surrounded by an elaborate arrangement of cartouches containing calligraphic inscriptions, invoking Qur'anic verses, prayers, and protective blessings. The composition radiates outward in symmetrical floral arabesques, interspersed with smaller inscribed medallions, reinforcing the bowl’s spiritual and mystical significance. The exterior is encircled by a prominent inscribed band along the rim, containing further Qur'anic verses believed to provide healing and divine protection. The lower section is delicately ornamented with a repeated sequence of amuletic symbols and astral motifs, drawing from Islamic cosmology and esoteric traditions. The rich patina and traces of verdigris suggest the bowl was cherished and possibly used for ritual drinking, healing, or divination. For similar see: Islamic Metalworks from Afghanistan, The documentation of Ismeo, Italian archaeological Mission, V.
