A PART OF THE DIVAN OF HAFEZ SHIRAZI, WRITTEN BY SULTAN MUHAMMAD NUR ALLAH
Iran, copy date 944 AH (AD 1837–38). A Persian manuscript on paper, written by the calligrapher Sultan Muhammed Nur Allah (born in 1472 and died in 1536, although sources do not confirm his exact year of death) in elegant black nasta‘liq script arranged in four columns within gold and black-ruled borders. Calligrapher Muhammed Nur was one of the best students of Sultan Ali Mashhasi. He was a writer and court attendant during the reign of Prince Ali-Shir Nava'i, the minister of Sultan Husayn Bayqara (Timurid King.) Calligrapher Muhammed Nur has a copy of the book 'Zafaran Meh Timuri' written in his hand in the library of Golestan Palace in Tehran. The titles of the poems are in gold and sometimes in blue (lapis lazuli.) Headings and section titles are picked out in gold and blue, with additional rubrication in orange. The opening bifolio is richly illuminated in polychrome and gold with elegant arabesque and floral motifs and a geometric lozenge medallion design. Several later folios also feature illuminated panels and devices marking transitions and conclusions. 139 pp. Housed in its original dark brown morocco binding with fore-edge flap, the covers tooled with central and corner floral medallions within a broad border of interlacing vegetal motifs stamped in gilt. The doublures are lined in plain purple paper, showing signs of age and devotional use.Size: 230mm x 150mm; Weight: 545gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
