AN ILLUMINATED OTTOMAN MANUSCRIPT OF PRAYERS AND DEVOTIONS, DU'A'
Ottoman Turkey, Ca. Late 18th – early 19th century AD. An Arabic manuscript on paper, 90 leaves plus flyleaves, with 15 lines to the page written in a clear naskh script in black ink, some important words and invocations picked out in red or gold, gold rosettes between verses, sura headings in white thuluth script on gold banners, polychrome and gold floral illumination at the beginning of sections. Opening bifolio with finely executed illuminated headpiece with palmettes and floral scrolls in gold and polychrome against a blue ground. Two finely painted architectural illustrations of the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina and the Raw??ah (tomb chamber), shown with domes, lamps, minbar and cenotaphs, executed in ink, gouache and gold. In contemporary gilt-tooled red morocco binding with central lobed medallions and cornerpieces filled with arabesques, fore-edge flap, and inner doublures decorated with block-stamped paper. A devotional manuscript containing a selection of well-known prayers, supplications, and praises of the Prophet Muhammad, including the Dal??il al-Khayr?t and other litanies (awr?d), commonly used for personal piety and spiritual merit. The illustrations of Medina suggest a focus on devotional pilgrimage and veneration of the Prophet.Size: 160mm x 120mm; Weight: 260gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
