AN OTTOMAN OR MAMLUK DEVOTIONAL MANUSCRIPT, LOOSE LEAVES
Near East, possibly Egypt or Ottoman Turkey, Ca.18th or 19th century AD. A group of loose manuscript leaves from a devotional Arabic text, likely compiled as a supplicatory or liturgical work. Comprising approximately 16 pages written in a large, elegant naskh script in black ink with red vocalisation marks. The calligraphy is carefully spaced, arranged in single or double columns per page, and each line clearly delineated. The paper is burnished and watermarked, and the margins have been later reinforced with pale pink paper. The text includes Qur’anic excerpts, invocations (du‘a), and phrases of praise and supplication, some of which are commonly recited at the end of a Qur’anic reading. These may have been intended for collective recitation or use by a religious leader. Several folios contain colophons or scribal notes in faded or rubbed ink, indicating reuse or later annotations.Size: 330mm x 235mm; Weight: 35gProvenance: Previous property of a UK based Islamic art professional.
