José Benlliure y Gil, painter from the nineteenth century from Valencia, belonged to a family of artists: both his father Juan Antonio and his son, José Benlliure Ortiz were painters. After his studies at the "San Carlos" Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia, he trained in the studio of the painter Francisco Domingo Marqués. He presented his works at the Madrid and Paris Salons with Spanish subjects and paintings of a religious nature, in which he expressed a deep attachment to Christianity and symbolism. & Nbsp; He moved to Rome where he became a point of reference for the colony of Spanish artists. From 1903 to 1913 he became a professor at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. The work is signed lower right.
