A roman chalcedony intaglio. Dog in a shell attacking a dolphin.
1st - 2nd century A.D.
12 x 17 x 4 mm
A hunting dog comes out from the mouth of a marine shell to bite a dolphin. Unusual fantastic and allegorical marine hunting scene. This intaglio belongs to a rare class of roman engraved gemstones depicting predatory mammals that emerge from shells or snail shells to bite and kill prey such as fish, rabbits, mice, insects. This genre is placed near hybrid fantasy subjects such as gryllos or like scenes composed of cicadas and grasshoppers who perform human actions, according to a certain apotropaic sense of irony. This marine hunting scene is finely engraved on a splendid chalcedony, alluding to the aquatic element. Slight signs of wear.
