ERNEST DEZENTJÉ (Jakarta 1885 – 1972) Gunung Salak, 1936 Oil on canvas: 30 x 50 cm Signed “Ern. Dezentjé” on the lower left corner. “Gunung Salak Baijar 1960 E. Dezentjé 11-2-195…”, on the back. Provenance: Acquired before 1975. Ernest Dezentjé was born in a French origins’ family in Jatinegara, Jakarta, in 1885. A self-taught artist, he is considered a leading member of the early “Indonesian School” of painting. Member of the Bataviasche Kunstkring, he had numerous collective and solo exhibitions in Jakarta, becoming an Indonesian citizen after the World War II. The main subject of his paintings is the Indonesian landscape. He had also many disciples.
