Piero Cappuccilli (Trieste, 1926 - Trieste 2005)

Born after he started studying architecture in Rome, parents originating in Ripabottoni in Molise, it discovered an interest in the work and in 1956 he made his debut at the "Teatro Nuovo" in Milan in Pagliacci. In 1957 he won the "Viotti Competition" in Vercelli, who took it in Germany through an extensive tour of 34 performances of The Barber of Seville by Rossini, a title that will resume only occasionally thereafter, including record edition. Within a few years he specialized mainly in the Verdi repertoire and early sixties began to appear in the major Italian and foreign theaters (early was the debut in 1960 at the Metropolitan La Traviata, which remained the only presence at the Met), imposing as one of the most established baritones of the new generation. In 1964 he made an important debut at La Scala in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, followed by Aida and Il trovatore. In 1966 he began at the Arena di Verona in Rigoletto and in 1967 at Covent Garden in London's La traviata. In 1969 he reappeared in the United States, in Chicago, in The Puritans, and in 1971 she sang at La Scala in a memorable edition of Simon Boccanegra. In 1973 at the Paris Opera in Il Trovatore. The year 1975 saw him again in Milan in Macbeth, conducted by Claudio Abbado and directed by Giorgio Strehler; the same year Don Carlo at Salzburg and 1976, again at La Scala, Otello, conducted by Carlos Kleiber. Remember always to scale, in 1983, Charles Gerard in Andrea Chenier, show that a video recording exists. In 1989 he appeared for the last time in Milan theater as Scarpia in Tosca, a role which he attended only in recent years. His career continued until 1992, when, returning from a performance at the Arena, committed a serious car accident that forced him to retire from the scene. He devoted himself to teaching later.
