A LARGE POLYCHROME PORCELAIN DISH WITH THE 'SIX IMMORTAL POETS'

Japan, Meiji period

The decoration - painted in rich polychromy - showing the six poets to the center of the ground, the scene enclosed by a wavy profile frame with vegetable arabesque and small polylobate reserves with floral and bird compositions, a metal structure on the back to hang it, partially readable mark to the centre of the base.

47,5 cm diameter

Provenance: Italian private collection.

The 'Six Immortal Poets' (六歌仙, Rokkasen) are literati who lived in Japan in the 9th century, whose verses are still highly regarded. The group was created by Ki no Tsurayuki, author of Kokin Wakashū, a famous anthology of poems compiled at the beginning of the 10th century.
