A STONE RELIEF WITH YASHODA NURSING KRISHNA
Central India, 11th-12th century
The relief depicting a female figure lying on a bed with her right hand to support her own head, intent on offering her breast to a child; on the right a kneeling devotee holding the foot of the female figure; on the bottom nine smaller standing figures.

Provenance: Italian private collection.
According to some Hindu legends, the little Krishna was entrusted to Yashoda to raise him, thus guaranteeing his safety from Kansa, the king of Mathura, who wanted to kill him as soon as he was born.
