A INK AND COLOURS ON FABRIC JAIN PAINTING

Provenance: Italian private collection.
The painting depicting the Jain representation of the universe as two circular diagrams between which a human figure is inserted.
In the center of each diagram the Mount Meru, surrounded by continents and the Salt Sea where aquatic animals and lotus flowers live. Outside symbols of the earthly world, including animals, architectures and trees, the entire composition framed by a frieze with goats.
According to Jain cosmography, the universe is divided into three kingdoms: the upper one with the celestial beings, the intermediate one with mortals and the lower one with the damned.
