walrus ivory Scrimshaw (Odobenus rosmarus Linnaeus, 1758) finely engraved with a depiction of a three-masted whaling ships under full sail accompanied by a female figure with the US flag symbolising liberty.The term Scrimshaw refers generically to the artwork created by Pacific Ocean whalers from the mid-18th century onwards using mainly the sperm whales' and other whales' teeth.
Engraved with the inscription “Ship James Allen - Liberty - 1830 - D.M.”.
Height x width x depth: 59 x 7.5 x 4.5 cm. Weight 2000 g.
Accompanied by Ce.S.Ar. Centro Studi Archeometrici certificate of authenticity (pre-1947).

THE CITES ARTICLE 8 (3b) DEROGATION
The article 8 (3b) derogation - Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97, the so-called "antique derogation”, and the article 62 - Commission Regulation (EC) No 865/2006, in conjunction with Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/2080 of 16 December 2021 amending Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97 and Commission Regulation (EC) No 865/2006, allow to sell this kind of item (defined as pre-1947) within the European Union.
Current legislation states that if an item has been manufactured prior to June 1947 and has been significantly altered from its natural raw state for jewellery, adornment, art, utility or musical instrument before that date, a CITES certificate is not required.
