A POLYCHROME ENAMELED PORCELAIN ‘PRONK’ DISH

China, Qing dynasty, 1740 circa

To the center of the ground a scene set in a glimpse of landscape with an elegant lady sitting on a chair under a canopy, another lady hands her a flower and around four children, the rim with twelve circular cartouches with flowers or insects reserved on a green geometric ground with baroque leaves, the back covered with ancient paper with a stamp to the center and the inscriptions "32" and "152" by pen.

3 x 26,3 cm

Provenance: Alberic Goethals (1843-1897); Italian private collection.

It is very likely that the preparatory drawing for the decoration of this dish was conceived and carried out by Cornelis Pronk (Amsterdam 1691-1759), a decorator who is known to have received between 1736 and 1739 a commission for this work by the Dutch East India Company.
A similar dish is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of New York (C. Le Corbeiller - A. Cooney Frelinghuysen, Chinese Export Porcelain, New York 2003, pp. 26-27).
Alberic Goethals (1843-1897) was a photographer and owner of a textile factory in Belgium.
