PHILIPPUS BEROALDUS (FILIPPO BEROALDO)
Orationes et carmina. Bologna (Benedetto Faelli the elder), July 1502. (Bound with, of the same:) De felicitate opusculum. Bologna, (Benedetto Faelli the elder), June 1502.

4to, 19th cent. half vellum, golden title on red morocco label, a few browning to the last few leaves, the lower blank margin of the last leaf torn off and repaired, red edges. Roman and some Greek type, some woodcut initials. Heading at the beginning of text printed in red printer’s device at the end.
Rare very early editions of both works. Beroaldus’ treatise on “Happiness” is universally considered his most important and most esteem writing, intended as an introduction to his lectures on the Georgics of Vergil and Columella’s De rustica. It is an educational as well as a philosophical expounding of classical literature on the subject, stressing the importance of physical and mental health: “Felix cui constant bona corporis et bona mentis . . .” (d7 recto). The book is of course also of medical interest with references to Galen, Hippocrates and Avicenna; physical exercise and gymnastics are mentioned. Edit16 CNCE 5569; BMC STC it. p. 89.
