JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES (1939). SERIGRAPHY - "Tanta foi a Tormenta e a Vontade"
Serigraphy on handmade paper, signed and numbered, XXV/XXV. Catalogued in the graphic work "Volta ao Mundo", by José de Guimarães, page 389.Approx. 54x69 cm. José de Guimarães (1939)José Maria Fernandes Marques (1939), known as José de Guimarães, was born in the city that gives him his artistic nickname, which he adopted from 1961. He is a Portuguese plastic artist, who produces in several techniques and creative areas. He entered the Military Academy and the Engineering course at the Technical University of Lisbon in 1957. His artistic training began the following year, in 1958, when he started attending painting classes and studying engraving at the Cooperative Society of Portuguese Engravers. He traveled around Europe between 1961 and 1966, as well as completing his degree in Civil Engineering. In 1967, he joined a military service commission in Angola, where he acquired interest and knowledge of black art. He returned to Portugal in 1974 and began producing sculptures in 1980. His artistic production seeks relationships with regions such as Africa, Japan, Mexico, Tunisia and China, places that stimulated him to develop a language and imaginary of the Portuguese memory and its relations with these distant countries. He was awarded the Grau de Comendador da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique in 1990 and the Grau da Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Mérito in 2005. He has a great involvement in the cultural and artistic life in his hometown, where he saw the birth of the Centro Internacional de Artes José de Guimarães, in 2012, and from which he received the Medal of Artistic Merit, in 1989. He has held solo and group exhibitions all over the world, and his work can be found in several museums on various continents.
