Zvi Hirsch Shils (1899–1987) - Exhibition catalog ”Photos from the Ghetto”. Zvi Hirsch Shils (1899–1987), born in Poland, studied art in Lodz and Warsaw, and was imprisoned in the Lodz ghetto in 1940. He was forced to paint portraits of SS officers, but in hiding he documented the difficult and horrific daily life in the ghetto on torn burlap sacks and with meager means. He survived the Auschwitz and Dachau camps, and after the war he immigrated to Israel and settled in the Artists' Center in Safed.
