Henri Alexandre Georges Regnault - The morra game oil on canvas, 87,5by117,5 Signed on lower left: H.Regnault Son of the chemist Henri Victor Regnault, the artist enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was a pupil of Louis Lamothe and Alexandre Cabanel.Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1866, during his stay in Italy, he also traveled to Spain and in Madrid he witnessed the Carlist revolution, the victory of General Prim and the escape of Queen Isabella; from that experience General Prim drew the inspiration for the painting, now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, which he presented at the Salon of 1870 (of the work Théophile Gautier wrote that ”Prim is all of Spain”). After a stay in Morocco (where he bought a house), Regnault returned to France for the Franco-Prussian War, was drafted as a sniper and died at the Battle of Buzenval on January 19, 1871.
