Pair of gilt bronze sculptures depicting the so-called Marly Horses
h. cm. 34.
Commissioned by Louis XV to Guillaume Coustou in 1743, the monumental marble sculptures, depicting two wild horses stopped by Indian slaves, decorated the watering hole located at the entrance to the park of Marly Castle, where they remained until 1794 when they were moved to Paris at Place de la Concorde. Exposed to the continuous action of atmospheric agents, the horses were first restored in 1840 and then moved to the Louvre Museum in 1984.
