Large ”Roter Drache” porcelain dinner service, Meissen, 20th century - 103 pieces comprising 12 soup plates, 22 dinner plates, 12 fruit plates, 12 bread plates, 2 gravy boats, 2 legume bowls with lids, 1 oval tureen with lid, 4 oval trays, 1 circular tray, 1 bowl, 2 salad bowls, 1 coffee pot with lid, 1 teapot with lid, 1 milk jug, 1 sugar bowl with lid and 11 tea cups with related plate, underglaze crossed swords mark in blue, several numerals in iron red and set in the paste.The ”Red Dragon” motif (also called ”Roter Hofdrache”) probably derives from Japanese porcelain, which in turn includes Chinese symbols such as the dragon, the phoenix and the ”eight gems”. It was reproduced in Meissen around 1730 and reserved solely for porcelains in use at the court of Saxony, a privilege that lasted until 1918.
