Gould Trogonidae - Black-headed Trogon 1835
This original lithograph of the Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephala) is from John Gould’s A Monograph of the Trogonidae, or Family of Trogons. Published by J Gould, Golden Square, London 1835 and printed by C Hullmandel. First edition. The hand-coloured lithographs, heightened with gum arabic, were drawn and lithographed by John and Elizabeth Gould and printed by C Hullmandel. The first edition of this work was issued in 3 parts between 1835 and 1838 and illustrated with 36 plates; 34 species were described, including 12 “new to science”. This plate is from Part 2 of this series. The trogon’s plumage is very remarkable and characteristic. John Gould was one of the most respected ornithologists of all time. As a taxidermist, traveller and accomplished artist, he created detailed images of almost 3,000 birds from all over the world.Working from John Gould’s sketches of birds in situ, his wife Elizabeth completed the images for this work and lithographed them onto stone then hand-coloured each print. Gould’s prints are some of the most beautiful bird prints ever produced and this is a fine example of his work. Size: approx. 21inx 15in (53cm x 38cm)
Condition: The print is in excellent condition with small water stain in lower right margin. Please inspect the image carefully
