Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782) – Antique Map of Asia Minor – "Asia Minor and Syria in Antiquity" (1794)
Map provides a detailed representation of Asia Minor and parts of the eastern Mediterranean during antiquity, extending from Greece and the Aegean Sea in the west to Armenia in the east and from the Black Sea in the north to the ancient city of Sidon in modern-day Lebanon. The map covers present-day Turkey, Syria, Cyprus, and Lebanon, with portions of Greece and Armenia also depicted.D’Anville's meticulous cartographic style is evident in the precise detailing of mountains, rivers, cities, road networks, and political divisions, all outlined in delicate hand-coloring. The map also features multiple distance scales in the lower-left corner, demonstrating the scholarly approach of d’Anville, who based his work on classical sources and geographical studies. His maps set a new standard for accuracy and historical cartography, influencing later geographic works well into the 19th century.Artist or maker:Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’AnvilleMedium:Engraving with hand-coloring on paperDate:1794Dimensions:57 cm × 71 cmCondition Description:This work is in good condition overall.
