VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the first four books of the treatise "The Conics", one of the main mathematical works of antiquity. Originally composed of eight books, the first four books survived in Greek, while books 5 to 7 only in Arabic, only translated by Abraham Ecchellensis into Latin in 1611, with book 8 having been lost. In this treatise, Apollonius demonstrates hundreds of theorems using Euclid's geometric methods, considered by many to be the pinnacle of Greek mathematics and introducing the terms parabola, ellipse and hyperbola applied to curves produced by cuts to a single cone. Until the 19th century, no other properties of conics were discovered than those defined by Apollonius. This first, very rare and very important edition, was translated by the Venetian Giovanni Battista Memmo (ca. 1466-1536), professor of mathematics in his hometown, based on an unidentified manuscript. VERY RARE, IMPORTANT and VALUABLE.
