SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL: (1581-1660) French Catholic Priest. Venerated both in the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. Canonized in 1737 by Pope Clement XII. Vincent de Paul is known for his humility and for serving the poor. Extremely rare L.S., `Vincent de Paul I[ndigne] P[retre] D[e] l[a] M[ission]´, (''Vincent de Paul, Unworthy Priest of the Mission''), one page, 4to, Paris, 11th January 1658, to Firmin Get, in French. The written text is in the hand of Saint Vincent de Paul´s secretary Bertrand Ducournau. Saint Vincent de Paul refers to two persons who have recently passed away and states in part `The grace of Our Lord be with you for ever... God has decided to call to His side one of our good brothers named François Hémet, who passed away the day after, on the 5th of this month, aged 45 or 50 years old. His death responds to his life, because he has been in both cases ready and full of good feelings, and we cannot expect better from a pious man…´ further referring to a box sent by his correspondent `We have learned that the box you sent to M. Le Vacher and which is waiting for, has left Lyon, and he will be able to receive it in the next two or three days.´, and further again saying `One of your good brothers has arrived to Paris to sort out matters, we are waiting for him today to start few days of retreat...´ With addressee to the verso, also bearing an attractive blind embossed seal. Small overall age wear, with very few and very small pinholes, otherwise in very fine condition. About VG Firmin Get (1621-1682) Superior of the Mission in Marseille.
