HUMBOLDT ALEXANDER VON: (1769-1859) German Natural Scientist, Geographer & Explorer. A good A.L.S.,
HUMBOLDT ALEXANDER VON: (1769-1859) German Natural Scientist, Geographer & Explorer. A good A.L.S., `Humboldt´, two pages, 12mo, [Paris], Saturday, n.d., [1822], to the Countess of Muy, in French. In his typically small and difficult writing, Humboldt apologizes for not having been able to attend the meeting of the day before because of the weather difficulties, stating in part `Le temps affreux qu´il a fait hier soir au moment où je voulais me render chez Madame la Comtesse de Muy…. It will be more prudent to postpone our nocturnal excursion until next moon. Mr. Arago, whom I saw at the observatory an hour ago, advises me to do so and I would not like to keep you prisoner in the forests you have planted") Humboldt further makes a curious comment saying `J´espere que le temps sera plus stable dans la lune de St. Louis et, qu´Astrologue plus heureux, je puisse vous tirer l´horoscope du process qui menace de vous priver d´une société dans laquelle vous répandez tant de charmes´ ("I hope that the weather will be more stable in the moon of St. Louis and, as a luckier Astrologer, I can explain to you the horoscope of the process which threatens to deprive you of a society in which you spread so many charms") With address leaf with very small area of paper loss as a result of the letter opening. G
