TOSCANINI ARTURO: (1867-1957) Italian Conductor. Renowned for his perfectionism, he leaded the Scala of Milan, The Metropolitan of New York and the NBC orchestra. He also premiered many famous operas such as Turandot of Puccini. A very good A.L.S., A. Toscanini, three pages, small 4to, n.p., 2nd May 1917, to Clancetti, in Italian. Toscanini thanks his correspondent for his letter and states `Thank you for your kind letter, I regret that I have to renounce to the pleasure and joy of attending the performance of Busoni´s opera..´ further saying `I have received a telegram of Busoni, informing me of the imminent performance of his work…and talks about another opera, I believe in one single act, of Arlecchino..´ Toscanini concludes mentioning his doctor´s recommendations, and his doubts about the explanations he is given, if truth or not. Two extremely small tears to the edges, none affecting the text or signature. Folded. VG £800-1200 Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) Italian Composer and Pianist. Arlecchino (1917) is a musical capriccio, one-act opera, composed by Busoni during his volunteer exile in Zurich.
