DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English novelist. A fine autograph envelope signed, boldly addressed by Dickens to Alfred Tennyson Esquire at St. James's Square in Cheltenham. Signed ('Charles Dickens') to the lower left corner. The envelope bears a Penny Red postage stamp and several postmarks, one dated May 1849. With the remnants of a red wax seal to the verso. An excellent association piece between two of the most famous literary figures of Victorian England. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG
Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892) 1st Baron Tennyson. British Poet Laureate 1850-92.
Tennyson resided at 10 St. James's Square in Cheltenham from 1846-50. Charles Dickens named his fourth son, Alfred D'Orsay Tennyson Dickens (1845-1912) after his godfathers, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Count Alfred D'Orsay.
The Pilgrim Edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens (Volume V, 1847-49) do not record any letters by Dickens to Tennyson in May 1849.
