SMIK OTTO: (1922-1944) Czechoslovak fighter ace of World War II who became the highest scoring Slovak fighter ace in the RAF. Killed in Action when shot down over the Netherlands. Rare portion of a World War II date D.S., Smik, one page, small 8vo, n.p., n.d., evidently neatly clipped from a combat report, the narrative stating, in part, 'I was airbourne (sic) from Base at 21.25….I was at 5,000 feet when I saw Diver below me…..I dived and attacked it from port quarter and below, using cannon only and giving 2-second burst. I saw red flashes on the fuselage and Diver crashed near Ashford. I resumed patrol and…..saw a Diver at 2,000 ft…..Dived and made stern attack….giving finishing burst with cannon. Scored hits on fuselage and both wings flew off. Diver crashed N.E. of Battle. At 22.00 hours I was over channel at 4,000 ft. Saw Diver below…..Went down and fired 2-second burst M[achine] G[un]. Saw no strikes owing to heavy rain but Diver exploded and fell near Tenterden…..' Autographs of Smik are rare in any form as a result of his death at the age of 22. Neatly trimmed and with one slightly clipped corner, about VG
