MANKIEWICZ JOSEPH L.: (1909-1993) American film director, screenwriter and producer, Academy Award winner. An unusual signed 8 x 10 photograph, the image depicting Mankiewicz standing in a full-length pose before a microphone as he prepares to make a speech at the New York Film Critics Circle Award ceremony of 1950, with several individuals (including Gregory Peck) seated in the immediate background, signed by Mankiewicz in black ink to the ample white border and with a lengthy explanation of the event in his hand, in part, 'Bette Davis had just finished a lengthy litany of “this was Joe's film!”, “Joe did it all!”, “Joe's were the magic words, direction etc..!” I rose with great embarrassment: there was nothing I could think of to say, except: “Bette forgot to say that on the Seventh Day, I rested!”'. Dated 1988/89 in Mankiewicz's hand beneath his signature. VG

Mankiewicz was given a Best Director award by the New York Film Critics Circle in 1950 in recognition of the classic film All About Eve. Bette Davis, who portrayed Margo Channing in the film, also won Best Actress at the same ceremony.
