RENAN ERNEST: (1823-1892) French Philosopher, Orientalist Scholar and expert of Semitic languages, Historian of religions and Critic. Renan wrote influential historical works on the origins of Christianity. An interesting A.L.S., `E. Renan´, one page, 8vo, Paris, 25th January 1860, in French. Renan responds confirming the safe receipt of his correspondent´s manuscripts `… renferment sur l'histoire du soufisme en particulier, d'importants détails et des réflexions très judicieuses…´ ( Translation: “… which contain on the history of Sufism in particular, important details and very judicious reflections…”) Renan further explains that he has forwarded to the Journal Asiatique `…votre notice de livres soufis trouvés à Constantine. Il sera très curieux de comparer le soufisme d'Orient et celui d'Afrique, et de voir en quoi cela peut modifier la donnée primitive…´ (“…your record of Sufi books found in Constantine. It will be very curious to compare the Sufism of the East and that of Africa, and to see how this can modify the primitive beliefs…”) G
