DU MAURIER DAPHNE: (1907-1989) English novelist. A good A.L.S., Daphne, four pages, 8vo, Menabilly, Par, Cornwall, 27th December 1945, to Gwenllyan [Davies]. Du Maurier states that it was nice to hear from her friend again and continues to write 'The year has been fairly uneventful for us, living quietly down here, and the ending of the war does not seem to have made much difference, with Boy [her husband, Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Browning] still in the Far East. He does not talk of coming back yet, and his last letter was full of plans to buy up a Chinese junk in Singapore', further stating 'So glad you liked my play. I never thought it would run a year, but everything seems to be doing well. I agree with you about the scenery! I also thought it “fussy”, and it was not by idea of a library at all, but I felt too diffident to say so! I've just finished a new book, due in the spring, called “The King's General” (dedicated to Boy!) But it's not about his activities in S.E.A.C., but about a very unscrupulous General in 1644! I think you and Reginald would enjoy it, if you can bear historical novels'. One very minor, slight paperclip rust stain to the upper edge of one page, otherwise VG

Frederick 'Boy' Browning (1896-1965) British Lieutenant-Colonel of World War II, known as the 'father of the British airborne forces'. Browning served as Chief of Staff of Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten's South East Asia Command from December 1944 until July 1946.

Du Maurier's play The Years Between was performed at London's Wyndham Theatre, opening on 10th January 1945 and starring Nora Swinburne and Clive Brook. The story unfolds in the library/living room of an English country house and became a long-running West End hit, completing 617 performances.

The King's General was published in 1946 and was the first novel Du Maurier wrote whilst living at Menabilly. The inspiration for the work came from the discovery of a skeleton whilst renovation work was being carried out at the house. The skeleton was thought to belong to a Cavalier of the Civil War due to its clothing.
