STEIN GERTRUDE: (1874-1946) American novelist, poet, playwright and art collector, famous for hosting her Paris salon where the leading figures of modernism in art and literature would meet. T.L.S., Gertrude Stein, one page, 8vo, Rue de Fleurus, Paris, 19th September n.y.. to Maurice Sachs. Stein states that it would give her much pleasure if Three Lives were to be translated into French, adding 'I am very nearly certain that I have the rights of translation but my agent Mr. W. A. Bradley, ……with whom in any case you would make arrangements concerning royalties etcetera, will be able to give you all the information you may desire' and further remarking 'As for the translator, I would indeed very much like it to be done by my friend Rene Crevel if he would care to, though of this I am not at all certain. He has for some time admired the book'. VG

 

Maurice Sachs (1906-1945) French-Jewish writer.

 

Rene Crevel (1900-1935) French writer associated with the surrealist movement.

 

Three Lives (1909) is a work of fiction by Stein which she wrote in 1905-06. The book is separated into three stories, The Good Anna, Melanctha, and The Gentle Lena.
