MAURIAC FRANCOIS: (1885-1970) French novelist & dramatist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1952. T.L.S., Francois Mauriac, two pages, 8vo, Saint-Maixant, Gironde, 12th October 1954, to Monsieur l'Abbe [Berard], in French. Mauriac writes, in part, 'No sooner had I written to you than I received a letter from Robert along the same lines as yours. So I will do what you both want. It is in fact very important, at a time when the government is going to make a new start with undoubtedly the socialist participation and when the M.R.P. finds himself rejected on the right, to constitute in this government and in this labour movement which is finally beginning in France a strong Catholic bastion. I see it more clearly now and I believe in all conscience that our political action, far from being opposed to our religious action, will no longer be distinguished from it. I intend, as soon as the next Bloc-Notes, to put my ideas on this subject into focus….Robert must absolutely not deviate from the Centre. I always spoke to him about it….I have thought carefully about this case: his political position must be only the flourishing of his apostolate' VG
