BACHMANN KARL JOSEPH VON: (1734-1792) Swiss aristocrat and Field-Marshal. Major General in command of the Swiss Guard during 10th August 1792 insurrection at the Tuileries Palace. Bachmann escorted King Louis XVI and the Royal Family to the National Assembly where they sought refuge. Accused of treason for ordering the Swiss Guard to resist the storming of the Royal Palace he was sentenced to death and guillotined wearing his red uniform of the Swiss Guard on 3rd September. Rare A.L., two pages, 4to, Paris, 22nd June 1792, to his daughter in law, in French. Bachmann refers to his son´s trip to Neffels, and further reports on the 20th June events stating in part `..the events of Wednesday 20th June of the present month, when people armed with spades went to the King´s residence..´ further sending instructions to his son `tell my wife to warn Mr. Bourger not to give any money sol to Bachmann and not to accept any debt he may have..My fortune do not allow me any more generosities, my wife has to know and all my family, because it is not for fun that I have been since revolution writing so often that I am without resources.´ The present letter was written only few weeks before the Palace of the Tuileries assault, and further execution of Bachmann.
