ROSSINI GIOACHINO: (1792-1868) Italian Composer. A very fine L.S., `G.Rossini´, two pages, Florence, 15th April 1850, to Mr. le Vicomte d´Arlincourt, in French. Rossini very kindly recommends to his correspondent a young composer, stating in part `…pour vous réclamer une faveur spéciale de vous; en plaçant sous l´égide de votre haut et puissant patronage Mr. Sarmiento don't le nom doit un jour tenir son rang au nombre de nos compositeurs distingués. Je conseille a ce jeune homme de se rendre en France pour poursuivre une carriere commencée en Italie sous d´aussi heureux auspices. Vous seul Monsieur le Vicomte pouvez lui faciliter avec bonheur sa carriere théatrale en lui portant l´appui de votre plume harmonieuse; la poésie est à la mélodie ce que l´esprit est à l´âme…´ ( Translation: “…to claim a special favour from you; by placing under the aegis of your high and powerful patronage Mr. Sarmiento whose name must one day hold its rank among our distinguished composers. I advise this young man to go to France to pursue a career begun in Italy under such promising auspices.
