PAUL VI: (1897-1978) Pope of the Catholic Church 1963-78. An unusual printed slim 4to booklet, being the text of the Apostolic Letter to the Venerable Brothers John Cardinal Heenan, Archbishop of Westminster, and Gordon Joseph Gray, Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, delivered on the occasion of the seven hundredth centenary of the birth of John Duns Scotus, the eight-page booklet printed in Latin and published by the Vatican in 1966, signed ('Paulus PP. VI') by the Pope in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone at the conclusion. Bound in the original paper wrappers with the gold printed coat of arms of Pope Paul VI to the front cover. Accompanied by a typed note, unsigned, in the third person, on the printed correspondence card of Paul Bertoli, apostolic nuncio, Paris, 20th October 1966, in French, sending his compliments and stating that he has the pleasure 'de vous faire parvenir sous ce pli un exemplaire, signe de la propre main du Pape, de la Lettre apostolique pour le VIIeme centenaire de la naissance de Duns Scot' (Translation: 'to send you herewith a copy, signed by the Pope's own hand, of the Apostolic Letter for the VIIth centenary of the birth of Duns Scotus'). John Duns Scotus (1266-1308) Scottish Catholic priest and Franciscan friar, philosopher and theologian, one of the four most important Christian philosopher-theologians of Western Europe in the High Middle Ages.

 

John Heenan (1905-1975) English prelate of the Catholic Church who served as Archbishop of Westminster from 1963-75 and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1965.

 

Gordon Joseph Gray (1910-1993) Scottish cardinal of the Catholic Church who served as Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh from 1951-85 and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1969.
