[MUSSOLINI BENITO]: (1883-1945) Italian Fascist Dictator of World War II. Unsigned 9.5 x 7 photograph (24 cm x 18 cm), being a contemporary copy of the iconic infamous image showing Mussolini hanging. The image bears to the verso an ink stamp of Renzo Pistone, photographer of Milan, dated 29th April 1945, the day after Mussolini was executed. The day before, Mussolini together with his mistress Claretta Petacci, had been captured and executed by Italian partisans at Giulino di Mezzegra, a small village in the province of Como, northern Italy, when the Duce was trying to escape to Switzerland. The bodies of Mussolini and Petacci were taken to Milan and hanged upside down alongside few other fascist leaders on 29th April 1945, at the Piazzale Loreto, a suburban square of Milan, with a large and angry crowd around committing even physical abuse on the dead corpses. The three other bodies hanging were those of Nicola Bombacci, Alessandro Pavolini and Achille Starace. Only two days before Hitler had committed suicide and a week later with the fall of Berlin the WWII reached its end. G
