ELGIN EARL OF: (1766-1841) English nobleman, soldier, politician and diplomat, known for his controversial procurement of marble sculptures (the Elgin Marbles) from the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens. A.L.S., Lord Elgin, in the third person, one page, 8vom Broomhall (Fife, Scotland), 1st January 1822, to Mr. Beloc (?). Elgin states that he would be obliged to his correspondent if they were to send 'to Mr Hamilton of the Foreign Office, another copy of the list of members of the Travellers Club', adding that he believes Hamilton is still at Southampton. Accompanied by an A.N.S. by Beloc (?), one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d., stating, in full, 'Is the autograph of that devastator and spoliator of the Parthenon the celebrated Elgin worthy (of) a place in your collection'. The Travellers Club is the oldest of the surviving Pall Mall clubs in London, and one of the most exclusive. The private gentlemen's club, whose membership largely consists of diplomats and travellers, was established in 1819.
