VARGAS GETULIO: (1882-1954) Brazilian politician who served as President of Brazil 1930-45, 1951-54. L.S., Getulio Vargas, two pages, folio, Presidential Palace, Rio de Janeiro, 31st May 1938, to German Busch (‘Grande e Bom Amigo’), in Portuguese. The official diplomatic letter is elegantly penned on official stationery featuring the gold printed coat of arms of Brazil at the head, and advises Busch that the ambassador Gastao Paranhos do Rio Branco is needed on another mission and will no longer be the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Bolivia, further remarking ‘I am convinced that Mr. Gastao Paranhos do Rio Branco, during his stay in your country, will have done everything possible to deserve the esteem and benevolence of Your Excellency, striving to maintain and strengthen the bonds of cordial friendship that fortunately exist between our countries’. Countersigned at the conclusion by Oswaldo Aranha (1894-1960) Brazilian politician, diplomat and statesman who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs 1938-44 and is remembered for lobbying for the creation of the State of Israel whilst President of the United Nations General Assembly in 1947 (for his efforts on Palestine, Aranha was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948).
