LOWE HUDSON: (1769-1844) Anglo-Irish soldier and colonial administrator who served as Governor of Saint Helena 1816-21 where he was the 'gaoler' of Emperor Napoleon. A.L.S., Sir Hudson Lowe, in the third person, one page, 4to, Plantation House, Saint Helena, 30th September 1819, to Countess Bertrand (Fanny Dillon). Lowe presents his compliments to his correspondent and replies to her note by acquainting her 'that Dr. Verling will possess every facility, so long as he remains on this island, of continuing his visits to her & her family', and further informing her 'that the names of the persons of whom she inclosed the list on the 28th will be left at Longwood Gate as having his permission to visit her, without applying to him for a pass'. Very slightly irregularly torn to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG

Elisabeth Francoise 'Fanny' Dillon (1785-1836) French noblewoman, the wife of Henri Gatien Bertrand (1773-1844) French General who served during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars and was head of the Military Household of Napoleon Bonaparte as the third and last General Marshal of the Palace.

Bertrand and his wife accompanied Napoleon on his exile to Elba and Saint Helena and the Countess was present in the room at Longwood when Napoleon died on 5th May 1821.

James Roche Verling (1787-1858) British Army surgeon who became the personal surgeon to Napoleon Bonaparte on Saint Helena.
