[LOWE HUDSON]: (1769-1844) Anglo-Irish soldier and colonial administrator who served as Governor of Saint Helena 1816-21 where he was the 'gaoler' of Emperor Napoleon. An interesting A.L.S. by Thomas Clarke, evidently a man of law, three pages, 8vo, Craven Street (London), 16th May 1823, to Sir Hudson Lowe. Clarke commences his letter stating ´Allow me again to press upon your consideration the great importance to your case in the possession of the whole of Mr. O´Meara´s letter to Mr. Finlaison of the 10 Oct.1816, and to beg that you will use every endeavour to procure it´, and continues to justify himself, ´The letters that we have already inspected afford the means of detecting many prevarications between the Book and affidavit; I therefore consider the whole of the letter of the utmost consequence to your case more particularly at the present moment, feeling confident it will lead to the detection of important inaccuracies in the affidavit, and may possibly establish a case of perjury´. VG
Barry O´Meara (1786-1836) Irish surgeon who accompanied Napoleon to St. Helena, where he became his physician.
The content of Clarke's letter is undoubtedly associated with O'Meara's book Napoleon in Exile, or A Voice from St. Helena which charged Lowe with mistreating Napoleon and caused something of a sensation on its publication in 1822.
