THOMAS DYLAN: (1914-1953) Thomas writes in support of a fellow Welsh poet
THOMAS DYLAN: (1914-1953) Welsh poet. A.L.S., Dylan Thomas, one page, 8vo, The Boat House, Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, 8th May 1949, to ´Dear Sir´ (annotated in ink at the foot of the page as being E. J. Evans, secretary of the Port Talbot Forum). Thomas seeks his correspondent´s forgiveness for not having replied to their letter earlier, explaining ´I have just come back to Wales to live, & letters have been misforwarded´, continuing ´I shall be most grateful if you will include my name in the list of those who are supporting the appeal to the Prime Minister for a Civil List Pension to be awarded to Huw Menai. I have the greatest admiration for him - though I do not know him personally - & for his work, & I think the Port Talbot Forum is to be congratulated on its sponsoring of the appeal - which I do most sincerely hope will succeed´. A letter of good content in which Thomas expresses his reverence for a fellow poet and countryman. Some very light, extremely minimal age wear, VG
Huw Menai (1886-1961) Huw Owen Williams. Welsh poet. Often facing financial hardship, Menai was indeed successful in receiving a civil list pension from 1949, largely thanks to the intervention of the Port Talbot Forum.
Dylan Thomas, along with his wife Caitlin and their children, had moved to The Boat House in Laugharne in May 1949, in the same month as the present letter. It would be the poet´s final home for the last four years of his life.
