Dumas writes to his close friend Desbarolles referring to his new “science”, quiromancy, and states in part `Cher ami, je reçois votre bien aimable lettre et m´empresse d´y répondre. Il y a présentement des affinités inattendues, car nous parlions il y a 2 jours de vous et de votre science si intéressante et si positive. Vous aviez dans la maitresse de la maison où j´étais, Mme Guyet Desfontaines, une adepte des plus convaincues. J´y crois aussi, car j´en suis arrive à croire à tout excepté au mal…´ (Translation: “Dear friend, I receive your very kind letter and I hasten to respond to it. There are currently some unexpected affinities, because 2 days ago we were talking about you and your science which is so interesting and so positive. Desbarolles worked on chiromancy and graphology, and was the author of the early work “Les Mysteres de l´Ecriture, l´Art de Juger les Hommes sur leurs Autographes” (1870) (“The Mysteries of Writing, the Art of Judging Men by their Autographs”)
