BARTHOLDI FREDERIC AUGUSTE: (1834-1904) French Sculptor, famous as the designer of the Statue of Liberty. An excellent set of two documents by Bartholdy, the first being an A.L., three pages, 8vo, Paris, 3rd December 1883, on his personal printed stationery, to Georges Glaenzer, in French. Bartholdi states in part `Three days ago, I received the letter from your worthy father-in-law. I was astonished to see that the patent of which he sent me a copy bears no relationship to what I had. I set out to turn all my papers upside down, and lord knows there is a pile of them from the ten years I have been working for the Franco-American Union..´ further saying `Whatever the case, I thought it essential that competent people examine the question with all the documents, in order to determine if a disclaimer with Stuckle is necessary or if it is useless.. As I wrote you in my last letter, you must send me the document or documents to be signed once more, since I was clumsy enough to lose them..´ The bottom part of the third page with the signature has been removed. To the second A.L., one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., Bartholdi lists three of his patents, the third being the Statue of Liberty one `Third Patent - No.11023, taken out by efforts of Mr. Pollock of Washington, February 18, 1879´ With edges slightly trimmed. G,2 £1500-2000
The U.S patent 11023 protecting Bartholdi design for the statue ''Liberty Enlightening the World'' was describing it as ''Statue of a female figure standing erect upon a pedestal or block.. The body is dressed in the classical drapery, being a stola, or mantle gathered in upon the left shoulder and thrown over the skirt or tunic The right arm is thrown up and stretched out, with a flamboyant torch grasped in the hand. The flame of the torch is thus held high upon above the figure .In the left arm is held a tablet, upon which is inscribed ''4th July 1776''..´
